Small Garden, Big Impact

Explore the thriving green ferns and trees beneath a stunning dome in a Scottish botanical garden.

Small plot, big plans. Our favourite city gardens are under 40 square metres — and the best of them feel twice the size. The trick is zoning: give every square metre one clear job.

Sit, grow, wild

Sit. One generous seat, morning sun if you can get it, and a surface for coffee. Two chairs beat six squeezed stools every time.

Grow. A single raised bed near the kitchen door earns its keep: herbs, salad, one tomato you actually eat. Curved paths between zones slow the eye and make the plot feel longer.

Wild. Leave one corner gloriously messy — log pile, native grasses, a small water dish. The birds will find it within a week, and so will your blood pressure dropping.

One focal point, not five. Hide the boundaries with climbers, light the path instead of the fence, and let one statement tree do the talking.
